It has been a long time dream of mine to bring in motivational and inspirational speakers for YOU! I know that many of you have been through extraordinary hardships, have few role models, and/or don't believe that there is a way out and up. It is my mission to change your thinking and your path through countless examples of how hard work, motivation, desire, drive, determination, and dedication can easily be your ticket to future success. You will see and hear it to believe and achieve it.
Now, the question is... Who do YOU need to hear from? You may suggest a specific person by name or you may suggest ideas for the kinds of people you would like to hear from. Perhaps it's as big as a past president or local leader or someone famous. (They may be difficult to get and I can't make promises but we will charm them together with heartfelt letters and cross our fingers.) Perhaps you are interested in a certain career and I can find someone successful in that field. Perhaps it is just a regular person who has gone through a similar hardship and made it out to adulthood in one piece.
This project is for you and means nothing without you. Your input matters. YOU MATTER.

Hi students! I'm thinking about signing up on DonorsChoose.org to purchase noise cancelling headphones for our class. My thoughts are that it would help reduce distractions and help increase your attention on your work during the Independent work rotations/groups (blocking out the groups that are with me/Ms. Colona or doing group work). I don't want to go to the trouble though if you are not interested. So... please vote below! |
Welcome! I'm glad you're here!
I am so excited to get to know and work with you! I have an open door policy and encourage your regular communication. Together, we are going to make this an awesome year! EVERYONE can become a better reader, writer, and collaborator. We’re all here for the same reason, so don’t fight it, embrace it! I am not your enemy. This class is not your prison. If you can put aside the “I can’t,” “Don’t wanna,” “Don’t like it,” “Don’t care,” “This is stupid, “ and work with me… REALLY work with me… I guarantee that your reading level will improve, your success in other classes will improve, and your test scores will improve. Becoming a proficient reader impacts your present success and your future opportunities for the GOOD life, for the rest of your life. Remember, YOU are in charge of your future. YOU are in charge of your learning. With power, comes responsibility. I will help you, but you have to help me help you. If you need more help or if something is going on outside of class that is affecting your work, you must tell me. If you are absent, you must get the make-up work, complete it, & return it in a timely manner. So no more excuses! Decide to pass. Decide to succeed. Decide that you are worthy of an amazing future. I am here for YOU! |
Yes, I am tough and will hold your feet to the fire but someone once told me my heart is bigger than a VW Bus.
Here are some things you should know: - I loved you before I even met you. (No really, this is completely true. I would say that it's a mom thing but I was like this before so it's just a me thing. I hope it becomes a you thing too.) - I can dislike you intensely but still love you fiercely. (You may tick me off royally but if you ever needed me, truly needed me, I would be there for you in an instant with no questions asked. This fact stands forever. Period.) - I have dreamed for you, hoped for you, prayed for you... just like I have with my own child. (I want the best for you! When you make mistakes, fail, hurt... my heart breaks too. When you succeed, make that connection, overcome that barrier, rise above it - seeing the light bulb click, your face crack a smile, your laughter - BEST. THING. EVER.) - What you say to me, good and bad, matters. I have a heart and a soul and am not a robot. (Wait, what?! Surprise!) - My crazy faces help me keep my cool but also, hopefully, breaks the monotony, adds some levity, and makes your load just a little lighter with laughter. (I'm okay with seeming just a little crazy. Hey, fair warning now that I'm a cheesy goofball. Don't believe me? Just you wait....) - I will sacrifice SO much for you... my health, my family, my sanity. No one is making me - you mean THAT much to me. I won't know for years if it was worth it, but I hope it makes a difference. Know that I will have tried and given it my all. |
You will soon learn that I take my job very seriously and I know that I will work you harder than many of your other teachers. Hopefully, you now understand why. It will not be because I hated you; it will be because I loved you. I am consistently top in not just the school and district but in the state, with regards to growth on the FSA. I rarely brag but it is important that you know that I know what I'm doing and you should help me to help you by listening and following my lead. I know that hard work is what it takes for you to grow and succeed in this world. I also know that my job isn't just about educating you.
My goals for you this year are for you to: learn to trust, take risks (academically and socially), increase your reading skills and level, gather a bag of tricks (strategies) that you could apply to any class, think and analyze deeply, make a friend, listen to your gut, speak intelligently (and without curse words), break the failure cycle, realize your worth, discover your voice, abandon laziness, find your inner motivational cheerleader, help others, experience success, and always, ALWAYS, to remember our mantra... |
Sincerely,
Mrs. McHone

Students Helping Students = Peer TutoringGetting stuck on an assignment and want a different perspective? Why not try a little help from another student that I have confirmed "gets it"! This is a new initiative that I hope will help you with a different approach. The following students did well on their assignment and are approved to peer tutor you. (Your peer tutor does not have to be from your class but it may be easier to find them that way.) They do have the right to refuse to peer tutor anyone though, as their own work comes first. However, if they keep a log of exactly who they helped and how they helped them (and I see the evidence of this in your work), then they get EXTRA CREDIT. It's a win-win!
***Peer tutors, you may NOT do the work for them. Your job is just like mine would be. Explain the concept, ask questions to get them thinking, peer edit, and brainstorm. Please also read the notes in Focus and on your assignment (with me) before you peer tutor to make sure that you are guiding them correctly. |

"Last Date Accepted" deadlines are quickly approaching! Don't get caught with a permanent zero in the grade book. Get your parent to sign your Late Work Slip, attach it to your completed work, and turn it in the yellow Late Work Box before time runs out. (Dates are always on the Work & Learning tab.)
|
Grading Update:
Late work status:
(Remember to attach a signed Late Work Slip and turn your late work in to the yellow Late Work Box. Please have patience and realize that I have multiple duties and you will have to wait for my earliest opportunity to get your grade changed. Unless you have an excused absence or official extended time (label it appropriately), your late work moves to my very last priority. If you want your work graded on time, please submit it on time.)
